FIBA’s announcement out of Mies, Switzerland on August 26 sets a term and a scope and then stops. The term is three years. The scope is the FIBA 3×3 World Tour, the FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series and the FIBA 3×3 World Cup, licensed exclusively to a New York company called L1VE under a category the governing body describes as immersive live rights.

That phrase carries the whole deal. FIBA’s release positions immersive live rights as a new class of media rights, sitting alongside broadcast and streaming rather than being carved out of either, and it credits L1VE, founded in 2022 with research and development in Germany, as the creator of the category. Read plainly, a governing body has agreed that a rights tier invented by a single vendor is a rights tier worth signing an exclusive on, for three seasons, across the properties that carry its 3×3 brand.

What the technology claim actually says

L1VE’s description of its own stack is specific in places and conspicuously vague in others. It captures a venue in stereoscopic 360 degree 3D. A real time pipeline fuses that capture into a single live scene. A delivery layer is meant to hold every viewer worldwide at the same instant of the game, which matters more than it sounds, because the product being sold is watching together rather than watching. Fans buy a ticket for a single day of competition or a pass covering a full event, then invite other people into the session with them. The company calls the result social presence and uses that framing throughout its materials.

What the release does not say is which headsets. It claims the platform runs on every major immersive headset and directs fans to download an app at l1ve.com, without naming a device, a store or a minimum spec. It gives no price for a day ticket or a tournament pass. It gives no rights fee, no revenue share, no guarantee. For an agreement whose entire novelty is that a new rights class can be licensed at all, the number that would establish what the class is worth is precisely the number nobody has published.

The first outing has already happened

According to FIBA, the L1VE platform launched publicly with the Detroit Lions on August 22, and its first FIBA event was the 3×3 World Tour stop in Debrecen, Hungary on August 29 and 30. Neither party has published attendance, concurrent viewers or ticket sales from Debrecen, and there is no particular reason to expect that they will. Deals of this shape in unproven categories tend to treat the first season as the experiment, which is a reasonable inference and not a claim either company has made.

Alex Sanchez, FIBA’s 3×3 Basketball Managing Director, framed the agreement as exploration, saying the federation is exploring new ways for audiences to experience the intensity and energetic setting of its events. David Morgenbesser, L1VE’s Chief Commercial Officer, made the sharper argument, describing 3×3 as one court, non-stop, right in your face, and therefore a natural fit. He is right about the format. A half court game with a short shot clock and no broadcast-mandated timeouts is close to the easiest live sport to cover from one fixed position, and one fixed position is where a stereoscopic capture rig lives.

Why this is structurally unlike Apple and MLB

VR.org covered Apple and MLB putting four Friday Night Baseball games into Apple Immersive on Vision Pro, the first of which aired on August 28. From the outside the two arrangements look like the same product. They are not. Apple owns the capture format, the headset and the distribution app, and no third party holds a licensable right anywhere in the middle. The immersive broadcast is an Apple TV feature. If Apple loses interest, the category goes with it.

FIBA’s deal puts a vendor in the middle and gives that vendor something to point at in the next conversation with the next federation. That is the part rights holders should be watching. If immersive live rights survive as a separate line item, they are incremental revenue against inventory a federation already owns, sold to an audience that was never going to fly to Debrecen. If they fold back into the streaming package within two seasons, they were a relabelled discount.

So the useful question for anyone who takes a similar call over the next year is not whether the headset experience is any good. It is whether the contract treats immersive as its own exclusive tier, the way this one does, or as a clause buried inside a streaming agreement. FIBA chose the first, for three years, with a company that is four years old. Whoever signs second will be negotiating against that precedent without ever learning what FIBA was paid for setting it.

The Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 Women are headed back to the FIBA 3×3 World Cup after eight years, following a 21-10 win over host Singapore to secure the third and final ticket in the World Cup Qualifiers on Sunday.

Earlier, the Gilas Women squad, composed of Cheska Apag, Afril Bernardino, Mikka Cacho, and Kacey Dela Rosa, fell to Lithuania, 21-16, in the semifinals, relegating them to the battle for the last World Cup berth.

The Philippines then took control early in the match, building an 11-7 lead before Cacho went down with an apparent leg injury at the fourth minute. She later returned and helped extend the advantage, combining with Dela Rosa for consecutive baskets to give Gilas a 16-8 cushion with just over three minutes remaining.

Cacho then pushed the lead to 17-9, before Dela Rosa’s free throws stretched the gap to double digits. Singapore managed to trim the deficit, but Bernardino sealed the win, and the World Cup berth, with clutch free throws.

Dela Rosa had 11 points, while Bernardino and Cacho had 6 and 4 points, respectively.

On Saturday, Gilas opened with a 16-13 loss to Brazil before bouncing back with a 21-19 win over Singapore to advance to the knockout phase.

The Philippines last qualified for the FIBA 3×3 World Cup in 2018, where it finished 17th.

Two years after their Olympic triumph, Marie Reichert and Germany chase more gold at the FIBA 3×3 World Cup https://3x3ce.org/two-years-after-their-olympic-triumph-marie-reichert-and-germany-chase-more-gold-at-the-fiba-3x3-world-cup/ Tue, 11 Aug 2026 13:18:05 +0000 https://3x3ce.org/two-years-after-their-olympic-triumph-marie-reichert-and-germany-chase-more-gold-at-the-fiba-3x3-world-cup/

Return of the champion

The 2025 season was a write-off for Reichert, lost entirely to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Now, at last, she’s playing again.

“It was a really tough year, not being able to play at all in 2025,” Reichert told Olympics.com in Warsaw. “But I’m just super happy and proud to be back now. It’s so much fun playing again, playing 3×3 — I’m trying to enjoy every second.”

Germany arrive in Poland with a refreshed roster from the 2024 squad. Britta Daub, Ama Degbeon, and Laura Zolper make up the squad alongside Reichert, with Degbeon and Zopler the sole members to have played at last year’s World Cup, where Germany finished 11th.

“It makes me even more proud to keep representing Germany, and I’m trying to win as many more games as possible,” Reichert said. “We’re a new squad now, a new team, but the goal is to win another medal here at the World Cup.”
