MIES (Switzerland) – The curtain has fallen on the inaugural FIBA NXT Leaders Program, which brought together a diverse cohort of both current and aspiring leaders from across the global basketball ecosystem.
Launched last year, those taking part signed off their participation having accessed world-class learning opportunities and personal development experiences throughout their time on the program, with Geneva the last stop.
Created to strengthen professional leadership capabilities and build the knowledge, skills, and practical insights needed to thrive across a broad range of sport management disciplines, the program is aimed at members of National Federations, clubs, leagues and players looking to make the transition beyond their time on the court.
Participants enjoyed four intensive days in Switzerland, with events hosted at three iconic institutions: FIBA’s Headquarters, UEFA Headquarters, and the Olympic Museum. All offered an array of unique insights into various aspects of leadership, governance, and sports management.
It provided another unique opportunity for those involved to exchange experiences, extend international networking connections, and also learn from peers representing National Federations, clubs, leagues, and other basketball and sports organizations.
Participants were also able to attend the FIBA 3×3 World Tour Lausanne, providing an additional opportunity to experience a leading international basketball event firsthand.
For the final session of the 9-month-long program, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis delivered a presentation and discussion on FIBA’s global structure and strategic vision. This provided participants with insights into the organization’s role and priorities worldwide as the world governing body.
The last leg of the FIBA NXT Leaders Program was wrapped up with a memorable graduation ceremony at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball, where all of the participants celebrated the successful completion of their leadership development journey.
The first FIBA NXT Leaders Program was one that combined a wealth of online learning opportunities with in-person gatherings in Doha, Miami, and Geneva.
“We are thrilled to have concluded this first program and to have taken these successful first steps in supporting and inspiring so many future leaders,” stated Michal Konecny, Head of National Federations at FIBA.
“So many people have contributed to both the design and the delivery of this ambitious new program, which has offered so many first-class learning opportunities.
“We are particularly grateful to the many partner organizations who have supported it by offering valuable time and access for participants to develop their knowledge and skills. Being able to have the in-person sessions in Doha, Miami and Geneva was such a big part of the program and its success.
“Finally and most importantly, we congratulate the first-ever participants on their graduation. We wish them luck in their respective careers and hope many of them will take their experiences from this FIBA NXT Leaders Program and use them to help continue the growth of the sport globally.”
Following the success of the first edition, preparations are already underway for the second FIBA NXT Leaders Program, reflecting FIBA’s continued commitment to developing leadership talent across the global basketball community.
