England beat Australia to defend their men’s 3×3 basketball Commonwealth Games title on Wednesday (29 July).
Against the same opponent they defeated to win gold at Birmingham 2022, Team England edged the Glasgow 2026 final 19-17 at the Scottish Event Campus.
Neither side led by more than three points until the last 60 seconds, when Jamell Anderson’s dunk and Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye’s lay-up clinched gold.
“It’s incredible and I’m so proud of the team,” said Anderson after the game, which was watched by his three-year-old daughter in the stands.
“No matter what happens, we always stayed level and held each other accountable. That’s the most important thing for me.
“To win Commonwealth gold for England in front of my daughter, I’m finished. What else can I do?
“I hope that she remembers this day. I’m going to run and see my family now, enjoy some big sweaty hugs then have a great evening with the boys.”
It finished a night of double gold for Team England at the Scottish Event Campus, where the women’s wheelchair 3×3 basketball team upgraded their Birmingham 2022 bronze for gold by beating hosts Scotland 18-10.
